Miamisburg to Host Ohio State Cycling Championships
5th Annual Tour d’Burg to Draw Thousands
Coming on the heels of being selected as one of “Ohio’s Best Home Towns” by Ohio Magazine, Miamisburg has again been chosen to be the site of this year’s Ohio State Cycling Championships. Miamisburg’s 5th Annual TOUR d’BURG, sponsored by Kettering Medical Center – Sycamore, will be held on Sunday, July 19, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM in historic downtown Miamisburg, just 3 miles west of the Dayton Mall on Route 725. This event is free and open to the public with free parking.
Three components make this premier cycling event a popular attraction to both cyclists and spectators alike. First a family-friendly Tour Ride leaves Library Park at 8:00 AM for bike enthusiasts that want to tour the country roads from 25 to 75 miles depending on the riders’ preference. Food and water stops are conveniently positioned along the route. Last year over 200 riders from six states participated in this event. Download a registration form at: www.tourdburg.com
The focal point of the day is a one-mile circuit through the historic downtown, featuring top amateur and professional level men and women criterium racers competing in USA Cycling sanctioned races. Junior “crit” racers will start the day at 8:00 AM followed by the Masters, Men’s & Women’s races. Sprint speeds should exceed 40 mph with average speeds ranging 20 to 28 mph depending on the race category. The individual races will range in length from 30 to 60 minutes with fields upward of 50 riders. Over $6,500 in cash prizes will be awarded. Bleacher seats are available for spectators adjacent the finish line for comfortable viewing.

This free family event features a “village” atmosphere on First Street running parallel to the finish line between Central and Linden Avenues. Popular Miamisburg’s restaurants will have food available in the Food Court area, plus a Kids’ Zone, hosted by the Miamisburg Parks & Recreation Department, will supervise activities for kids of all ages.
Other participants will include title sponsor Kettering Medical Center Sycamore, KMC Sports Medicine, Five Rivers Metro Parks Outdoor and Heartland of Miamisburg. River Valley Credit Union will hold registration for free bikes plus other cycling items to be given away at the event, compliments of Heidelberg Distributing. This free family event also features a kids’ parade plus other activities geared to young children. Free kids’ bike helmets will also be given away while quantities last.
Specialty Races throughout the day will include the “Clergy Race” for those Men (and Women) in Black. Mayor Dick Church will again host the annual “Celebrity Race”, a crowd favorite with hometown celebrity emcee, Dale Huffman.

The races were spectacular! What a treat.
The incessant blabber by the “microphone personalities” was a real distraction. The main topic of conversation around me in the stand was, “I, wish they would shut up!”. I then left the stands and walked around the first turn to try to find some piece and quiet. A speaker was set up and loudly broadcasting. It was so bad someone took it upon themselves to turn the speaker around facing away from the crowd. A loud applause was given when that happened.
Good work racers, organizers, support people. We came to see the race and it was great!

I thought that the kid zone was a good idea and worked very well. My 7-year old got to watch some racing and also do some other stuff.
I was totally turned off by the two “microphone personalities.” Many of their comments were sexist and offensive. Talking about how “good” the women looked totally trivializes these athletes’ accomplishments. Their attempts to explain “Cycling 101″ to the crowd was a total bust. I can understand trying to explain many of the nuances involving bicycle racing to people unfamiliar with the sport but please do it in a clear and concise manner that doesn’t seem so patronizing.

Once again, THANK YOU for all your hard work on the Tour ‘d Burg ! I decided at the last minute to go ahead and try to make it through the 50 mile course – never did over 35 in my life – and met some nice folk ( all of whom had $5,000 bikes it seems !
, and while my right leg “thought about cramping up”, it didn’t. Whew ! ( Check with me tomorrow though ) I’d Googled a map which showed me a way to do a 35 or 40 mile trek…..but…..hey
The course was awesome – esp around the Chicken Bristle Rd area – saw NO cars, and the hills were a hoot ! Had to walk up two of them, but coming down was a blast – 30, 32, and 35 MPH was maybe the most fun I’ve had. At the bottom of one though was a 40′ patch of pure sand, and suffice it to say I was worried / lucky ! We all ” drifted ” a bit, but didn’t fall. The only negative about the trip.
Met and rode with a 74 year old – ” Charlie ” – on his $5,000 bike, and learned a lot about bicycling. My bike is a 15 year old Bianchi Hybrid ( AKA fat -36mm- tires ), but I was able to catch up with a bunch of $5K bikes and stay with them until two steep hills.
Maybe next year I’ll attempt the 75 mile route – sans a $5K bike ( maybe a new Giant – $750 – but not anything more ! ) At least I can now enroll in the M V Hospital Clemens Cancer Ride – 50 mile loop !
Now get back to work and good luck in getting caught up ! THANK YOU, and all the other volunteers for your time and efforts ! You are Super !
